History of AFM at Background The Borders Family, Norm, his wife, Kathryn, and son, Tony learned about the Angel Food Ministry (AFM) while living in Oklahoma and Texas for the previous two years. They returned to the Good Shepherd (GS) congregation in 2007, and Norm shared a vision on how AFM could be a blessing to the Northern Neck population and how it could extend Good Shepherd's service and witness to our community. AFM began at Good Shepherd in February 2008, and served 13 families. Just seven months later, Good Shepherd served 280 families from all across the Northern Neck of Virginia. The national AFM headquarters has told Norm that Good Shepherd is now the fourth largest distribution ministry center in the State of Virginia. What a blessing! Norm leads this ministry at Good Shepherd is also helping other area churches explore how they, too, can be a part of this ministry. Ordering Details "Angel Food orders must be placed in advance," Norm explains, "but the process is simple. Orders are taken throughout the month with orders for the current month due by the second Sunday of the month. You can place an order, or multiple orders, by seeing Norm at Good Shepherd, Sunday mornings at 9 am, or at the Heathsville Farmer's Market the third Saturday of the month, 8 am - 1 pm. Orders are also taken at the Church Office every Tuesday and Thursday, 5 - 7 PM, as well as the second and fourth Saturdays, 9-11:30 AM. Orders must be pre-paid in cash, charge cards, or with food stamps. Alternately, you can order and pay on-line at www.angelfoodministries.com. Menus for the month are also available at this site. Distribution The food distribution is scheduled for the fourth Saturday of each month between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. A cooler and a big box are needed for each bundle to be picked up. Orders not picked up by 2:00 PM on the distribution Saturday will be donated to local needy families. The distribution site has changed from Good Shepherd's Fellowship Hall to the former Hague grocery store in Hague. The new site is larger and is better equipped for unloading and distribution. Contributions Welcome Monetary contributions to purchase food packages for needy people are welcome. The Angel Food Committee will arrange for the orders and distribute the food. Just give your donation to Norm Borders or one of the committee. They will keep an accounting of your donations. Help Wanted Typically, 15 volunteers are needed to unload the truck, arrange and fill the food bundles, help the infirm take their bundles to their cars, take orders for the next month. And, the number of volunteers needed will increase as the number of families served continues to grow. Volunteers are always welcome. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
